Why Turn-Based RPGs Just Work on Phones
There's a reason turn-based combat keeps thriving on mobile while twitchier genres struggle. You can stop mid-thought, lock your phone, and pick up the exact same fight ten minutes later. No reflexes lost, no momentum wasted.
Playing Emberfall Chronicle on the tram made this obvious to me. I'd plan one turn, miss my stop almost, lock the screen, and resume at lunch like nothing happened. Try that with a fast racer.
The trade-off is that bad turn-based games feel like spreadsheets. The good ones give you decisions that actually branch — positioning, resource timing, when to gamble on a big move. Emberfall gets this right by making every battle a small puzzle.
If you've bounced off mobile RPGs before, I'd suggest looking for save-anywhere design and no energy meter. Those two things separate the games built for your life from the ones built to interrupt it.
