Cozy Games Aren't Lazy Design
People sometimes wave off cozy games as the easy option, like calm equals simple. Spending time with Orchard Keeper reminded me how wrong that is.
A relaxing game has nowhere to hide. There's no adrenaline to paper over clunky menus or a confusing loop. Everything has to feel good moment to moment, or the whole mood collapses. One badly placed button and the calm is gone.
Orchard Keeper mostly nails it. Planting and harvesting feel tactile, seasons give the world a heartbeat, and the villagers show up often enough to matter. The menus do get busy later, which is the only place the calm slips.
My advice for cozy game newcomers: don't rush it. These games punish min-maxing by draining the fun. Let the orchard grow slowly and it rewards you with something a faster game never could.
